easy english expression rehashed hello everybody my name is coach shane and welcome to easy english expressions come on let's master english everybody coach shane here yesterday uh in eq 561 we studied don't quit your day job in other words you're not that good

You're not that talented. But a lot of people are not that honest, right? They like to tell the truth. Or I'm sorry, they like to lie to make the other person feel good.

So today we have another excellent expression about lying. I love it. EQ of number 562. Enjoy today's expression. Let's go back in time. Today we have a nice word, sugarcoat.

And we use this as a verb. To sugarcoat something. S-U-G-A-R-C-O-A-T. It's one word. Now, to sugarcoat something means to put sugar on something. So for example, you make a donut and on top of the donut, you put sugar on there.

You are sugar coating the donut. But we use this expression when we tell people how they did. If we give somebody criticism or if somebody sings a song and they say, how did I do?

And we say, well, you did terrible. That's not nice. So we sugarcoat it. We say, well, you did okay in the beginning. So sugarcoating something means being nice when you actually want to be not nice.

So once again, you want to tell somebody you are ugly but that's not nice. So you say you are very interesting looking. You want to tell somebody you are fat but that's not nice. So you sugarcoat it and you say you look very, very healthy.

Oh, this is so not nice. I know. Yesterday wasn't nice. Today's not nice. But you know what? Sugarcoating things, we do that. We do that all the time.

Check out the dialogue and you'll see an example. So, how did you like my poem? Well, it was nice. Come on. Don't sugarcoat it. Tell me. Don't quit your day job.

Yeah, and this happens to me. You know, with my DDM students, when I listen to their pronunciation or my perf students, when I listen to their pronunciation, I don't sugarcoat it. I don't. If there are pronunciation LTH, whatever pronunciation is bad, I tell them.

I tell them, my God, TH is killing you. In my DDM live or my perf live lessons, if I don't understand a student, their pronunciation, I will say, what? What? Or I'll say, say it again in English.

Yeah, I know. I'm not too nice. I'm very direct. But that's my job. I'm a coach. So when I'm coaching you, my students, I tell them what the problem is.

I do not sugarcoat it. But many times we sugarcoat things. You might sugarcoat things. Not to everybody. Do you sugarcoat things when you talk about your brother or sister?

No, we're usually pretty mean. What about to your husband or wife? What about to your children? What about your mom or dad? What about your boss? What about your girlfriend or boyfriend?

When do you sugarcoat things? When do you make your criticism nice? That's the idea. Sugarcoat. Too sugarcoat. It's a great verb. Learn how to use it.
