Let's go back in time. Today's expression is to dump something out. To dump something out. Now, to dump something can actually mean to throw away. To dump out could also mean throw away, but this is actually a more common definition.

Let's say you have a cup full of coffee. Now, most people enjoy their coffee hot. Do you like your coffee cold? Not me. So if my coffee is too cold...

I usually dump it out into the sink. I pour it out into the sink. Now, sometimes if it's really good coffee or if it's not that old, I'll dump. So I buy coffee at Starbucks and it's in a paper cup.

And if it gets too cold, I'll dump it out. into a glass coffee cup and then I'll put it in the microwave and I'll reheat it. I don't like to reheat paper. I don't like to reheat plastic, but I will reheat glass or ceramic.

So I'll dump it out into a different cup. So the first example, dump out into the sink. Well, that does mean throw away. But the second example, dump it out into a glass coffee cup.

I'm not throwing it away. I'm just moving it from one place to another. Does this make sense? Okay, I've got another example of when we use dump out in the dialogue.

Check it out. Who dumped out my candies? The cats. And my pencil cup? The cats. What's their problem? I guess they don't like you. Yes, this happens to me, oh, I would say two or three times a week.

So in my kitchen, I have a little bowl. It's just a wooden bowl. It's not expensive. And in my wooden bowl, I have some candies. And every week, I find my candies on the floor.

My cats love to dump out the candies. They push the bowl over. over the counter, and they're dumped out all over the floor. And on my desk, I have a cup where I hold pencils.

I put pencils and right now I got a marker, a couple of pencils and two pens and a rubber band in my cup. This is on my desk. And once a week, I find the pencils have been dumped out of the cup. The pencils are on the floor.

And who does it? My cats. It's their game. But I know they enjoy doing it, so I let them. They have to have their fun. So to dump something out. So this week I'm getting ready to move to Chicago.

I need to dump out all of my drawers. I need to get all of my clothes out of my drawers and into boxes. I'm not throwing away my clothes. I'm dumping out the contents of my drawers and

Into boxes so that I can move. To dump something out. It's a great, extremely useful phrasal verb. Check out the dialogue a couple more times. Who dumped out my candies?

The cats. And my pencil cup? The cats. What's their problem? I guess they don't like you. Who dumped out my candies? The cats. And my pencil cup? The cats.

What's their problem? I guess they don't like you. Thanks so much for listening. Make sure to check out our webpage, www.letsmasterenglish.com. Try a free lesson.
