Easy English Expression 0538 to patch things up

Relationships can have their ups and downs, and sometimes all it takes is a little effort to make things right again. Today we're learning a simple expression for exactly that.

Enjoy. Let's go back in time. Today's expression is very good. To patch things up. To patch. P-A-T-C-H. To patch things up. It's a phrasal verb, to patch up.

So we need to know what patch means. P-A-T-C-H. Well, did you ever wear pants? P-A-N-T-S? Like blue jeans? Of course you did. Everybody has worn pants, I'm sure.

Even... Yeah. Everybody. Whatever. But I don't know. Maybe Plato never wore pants. Maybe Socrates. But I think everybody else has worn pants. And sometimes if you wear pants for a really long time, you get a whole...

In your knee, in the knee area of the pants, right? Well, you know, for me, if I get a hole in my pants, I do not throw away the pants. I take some other material and I put it over the hole and I sew it onto the hole so it covers up the hole. That is a patch.

Another idea of a patch, think of a pirate. Aye, a pirate. In the ocean, you know, they steal gold and stuff like that. Well, we have the image of a pirate with only one eye, and the other eye is covered with a patch.

Do you know why pirates... have patches over their eyes. Just one eye. They have a patch over one of their eyes. Do you know why? It's not because they're missing an eye.

No, it's not. It's so the one eye can see above the ship where it's bright with the sunshine. And when they go below the ship where it's very dark, They move the patch to the other eye.

And that eye can see immediately below the ship. Yeah, interesting, huh? Okay, useless information. Sorry. So anyway, today's verb is to patch things up.

And what it means is to repair, not blue jeans, but usually relationships. To patch things up means to repair relationships that have a problem. You and your friend, you and your dad, you and your wife or husband, whatever. That's the idea.

It's a great expression. Check out the dialogue. Come to the game with us. Oh, you and Sue are back together? Oh, yeah. We patch things up. Oh, that's great.

We'll join you. Sue and you had some sort of problem, but things are patched up. The relationship is good. Everything is happy. Congratulations. So let me ask you, is there anyone in your life right now that you have a bad relationship with?

There might be somebody, huh? Yeah. Would you like to have a good relationship with that person? Well, what can you do to patch things up? For me, is there anybody in my life that I need to have a good relationship that I do not know?

I don't have a relationship with anybody. Just me, myself, and I. Oh, no, there is one person. Yeah, there is one person. Yeah, we used to be really good friends, but we're not very good friends right now.

So what can I do to patch things up with that guy? Well, nothing. He has to agree with me. No, no, that's not the idea. So if I'm going to patch things up with him, I guess I should send him an email and say, look, we have our differences.

I don't agree with you, but hey, we can still be pretty good friends. Yeah, I need to do that. I'm going to do that. After this podcast, I'm going to send him an email.

What about you? Is there somebody that you need to patch things up with? Well, then do it. Send an email. Send a text. Go visit him. Send a letter. Give him a call.

Do something. Him or her. And patch that relationship up. Relationships are pretty important. At the end of the day, they're very important. That's today's expression.
