Today, we're learning a casual phrase you'll often hear when someone decides not to react to a mistake or minor problem. It's simple, natural, and very useful in everyday English.

Let's dive in. Episode 536. Let's go back in time. Today's expression is, let it slide. You should let it slide. He let it slide. Let, L-E-T, let it, I-T, slide, S-L-I-D-E. Let, L-E-T, that verb means to allow.

Allow it to slide. Let it slide. What is it? Of course, it is a pronoun, but it has a specific meaning. In this case, it means an infraction. infraction oh boy that's a tough word infraction i n f r a c t i o n what is an infraction something that you did wrong when you break the rules when you break the law when you do something wrong that is an infraction so for example at my house when i was a little boy

After dinner, if I wanted to eat a cookie or maybe two cookies, I had to finish all my meat and all my vegetables, including carrots. I hated carrots as a child.

Except on my birthday. On my birthday, if I didn't eat all my carrots, my mother would still let me eat cookies. Well, on my birthday, it was usually apple pie. But every other day, 364 days a year, I had to eat all my vegetables.

But on that one day, my mom let it slide. She allowed my infraction to slide. I did something wrong, but she let it slide. She forgot about it. She ignored it.

She pretended like it didn't happen. And that's the idea of let it slide. Does that make sense? I'll give you one more example, then we'll do the dialogue.

No, no, no. I'll give you the idea for an example. You're driving too fast on the road and the police stop you. What do you want to say? Let's check out a dialogue and I'll tell you.

Oh, I'm surprised to see you here at the party. Why? Your mom was so mad at you the other day. She always lets me slide. I'm her angel. Oh, my God. That doesn't sound like an angel.

Yeah, that's true, too. When I was in school, when I was a little boy... Well, a teenager. Every Friday night or Saturday night, there was always something fun.

Go to the movies or go to a dance. Meet my friends. But, you know, sometimes I made my mom really angry. And if my mom was angry, my Friday night was canceled.

Yeah. My mom never let me slide as a kid, only on my birthday, only with vegetables for everything else. My mom, I'm not joking. Never let me slide. Okay.

Um, and yeah, it was, my mom and dad were really strict, very tough. What about you? Did your mom let you slide sometimes? Did your dad let you slide?

My dad too. Oh, my dad was worse than my mom. My dad had strength. So I had to be really careful in front of my dad. You know what? I don't know. But I think nowadays too many parents let their kids slide.

I don't think that's a good idea. If you have a rule in the house, people should follow the rule, just like the laws. So once again, let's go back. You're driving down the road.

But do you think the police officer will let it slide? Well, maybe for some people. Not for me. And you know what? I'm super handsome. I'm like the Brad Pitt.

I'm really cool. I'm really handsome. Even the female cops never let me slide. Actually, I've never met a female cop, but we do have them in America and they're tough.

And I guarantee they probably will not let you slide. But tell me, has a cop, has a police officer ever let you slide? You know, I guess if it's for something small, they might let you slide. But yeah, I don't know.

Me, maybe I'm just an old guy, but I like rules. I like laws. And if it's a practical rule, a practical law, then we shouldn't let it slide. I think children should eat all their meal, their entire meal, the meat and the vegetables.

Then they can have a cookie. I think that's important. Get the nutrition, then have the sugar, right? Am I wrong? If you're driving down the street and you're driving too fast, you should get a ticket, right?

Oh, let's say the speed limit is 60 kilometers and you're going 62. Yeah, maybe you can let it slide. But if you're going 70, 75, I don't know, that's pretty fast.

If I were a police officer, if I were a cop, I'd give you a ticket. Oh, by the way, they say in the state of Texas, if the speed limit is 60 and you go 61, they'll give you a ticket.

Be careful. Some areas in America are really strict when it comes to tickets. They will not let you slide. I hope you understand the expression. It's a great one.
