A phrasal verb. If you want to master English, you need to master phrasal verbs. Now. I've been talking about a special announcement, so let me go through it again.

Let's listen to the podcast number 520. Let's go back in time. Okay, today's expression is very good. It's a phrasal verb. It is to follow along. To follow, F-O-L-L-O-W, along.

A-L-O-N-G. Listen to the pronunciation. Follow along. So this is an interesting phrase. as far as pronunciation is concerned. Two, we have the vowel O.

Follow, we have two O's. Along, we have one O. So we have four different O's, and each of those O's has a different pronunciation. Isn't it terrible? Two, ooh, it has an ooh sound, which is actually called a long double O.

Follow. The first ah is a short o. The second o sound is a long o. To follow along. That o is an aw sound. So the first o is oo. The second o is ah. The third o is o.

The fourth o is aw. Very different sounds in American English. And if you want to master American English speaking and American English listening, you need to master those sounds. It's really important.

That's what I do in DDM and PERF. Usually it means not only listen, but also take notes. Write things down. That's the idea. So when you go to school, your teachers will want you to follow along.

When I was teaching you the different O pronunciations, were you following along? Well, let's test it. The first O was... Ooh, that's right. The second O was...

Ah, very good. The third O was O, good. And the last O was AW, A-W sound. Yeah, did you get all four? If you did, you were following along. Good job. Now, let's check out the dialogue.

So he told me like 10 things. He told me I needed to do about 10 different things. But all I remember is drink water, reduce the coffee. That's it. I wasn't following along.

I hope – oh, dear Lord, please don't let me get kidney stones again. Oh, kidney stones. Kidney stones. If you don't know kidney stones, K-I-D-N-E-Y. Stone, S-T-O-N-E. Kidney stone, kidney stones.

Horrible. Absolutely horrible. So can you think of a time when you were supposed to follow along but you didn't and then there was a problem? It happens to all of us.

It happens to all of us. Maybe when you're cooking, you're supposed to follow the directions. You're listening to somebody. They're telling you how to cook, but you don't write it down.

You don't listen carefully. In other words, you don't follow along and then you cook and it's a disaster. It happens. It happens. Yeah. Taking those tests in high school, in college.

Yeah. Yeah, you need to follow along. If something's important, you need to follow along. What does follow along mean? It means to listen carefully. And also it usually means to listen carefully, step by step by step and take notes.
