Cut to the chase. Cut. C-U-T. Cut to the chase. C-H-A-S-E. Cut to the chase means get to the point. Stop talking about all the other stuff. Tell me what the important thing is.

Tell me the climax of the story. Get to the meat and potatoes. I don't care about the vegetables. I don't care about the soup. I don't care about the salad.

I want to know what the main idea, the main point is. Cut to the chase. It's a great expression. Cut to the chase. Stop talking about blah, blah, blah, blah.

Tell me the point. Why do we say cut to the chase? I'll tell you after you listen to the dialogue. I've got a big favor to ask. Go ahead. Well, you know how I love you, and I think you're the greatest.

Cut to the chase. Can I get $20? Believe it or not, that was a husband and wife. Yeah, the husband is trying to get $20 from his wife. So he tells her, first of all, he tells her, I love you.

You're the greatest. Guys, are you like that? If you need something from your wife, do you have to say lots of other things before you get to the point? Or are you able to cut to the chase right away?

When you talk to your boss, when you talk to your boss, let's say you want to have – you don't want to work on Monday. You want an extra day holiday or vacation or you need to leave work early.

to do something maybe it's a birthday party maybe it's a trip maybe it's your child's school performance you want to do something you want to leave early you need to ask a favor are you able to ask right away or do you need to say lots of nice things first are you able to cut to the chase it's a great expression me there's nobody around me so I always cut to the chase I'm very direct

Maybe that's American. In some cultures, I know it's probably not good to be direct. But in America, lots of people are direct. So it's not so bad. You can be polite and still be direct.

But why? Why, why, why, why, why do we say cut to the chase? Well, this expression comes from Hollywood. And the word cut... literally means to cut film.

So nowadays, all film editing is done on computers. But a long time ago, they filmed with film. It was like tape, and they had to cut the tape and put things together.

Well, the traditional Hollywood movie... There's always a climax, a very exciting scene where all the action takes place and it's usually a chase. Usually the police are chasing the bad guy or Superman is chasing Lex Luthor or Batman is chasing the penguin or something like that. There's always a chase scene.

Die Hard has a chase scene. All the good movies, all the man movies, even cowboy. Cowboy movies, they have the shootout. Everybody's shooting each other.

Yeah. Well, in action movies, we have the chase scene. And that's the idea. Cut to the chase. Tell me about the exciting part. Tell me about the exciting thing.

What is the climax? They say in Hollywood, if you have an idea for a movie and you want to sell the movie to a Hollywood producer... You get a meeting and then you go to the meeting. My movie is about a young man who wants to save the world.

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Cut to the chase. Cut to the chase. What's the action scene? What's the big climax? Tell me that. If they like the chase scene.

They'll fund your movie. I don't know if that's true or not, but that's my understanding. Are you interested in becoming a Hollywood producer? A Hollywood filmmaker, rather?

Then you need to learn how to cut to the chase. It's a great expression. We use it a lot in daily English. So I want you to practice and think about this expression.

Pay attention. Do some online searching. See if you can find other examples of cut to the chase. Okay. Let's check out that dialogue a couple more times, and together, let's master English.
