What the? the so what the is just two words w h a t what the t h e and then dot dot dot now actually it's only part of an expression and one version the full version would be what the heck what the heck we can be a little bit stronger and say what the hell what the hell

And many people do use the really tough or bad version. What the... With an F. And the word sounds like duck. But there's no D. It has an F. So, you know, it's a bad word. I'm not going to say it.

Now, lots of people just on the internet, they type WTF. And that's the same thing. What the... But a nicer way would be, what the hell? And even nicer, what the heck?

And even nicer, what the? Okay, so this expression is very useful when you hear something that is illogical. It doesn't make any sense. It sounds crazy.

Did you know that Coach Shane is 22 years old? where did you hear that that's crazy where did you 22 yeah he was 22 years old a long long time ago that's true oh my god 1989

is when I was 22 years old. That's a long time ago. Anyway, now I'm going to cry. So it is a very good expression. You see something crazy. You hear something crazy.

You see something that doesn't make sense. It's illogical. It's ridiculous. It's a lie. It's impossible. You can say, what the? Now, can you say this expression at work?

Yes. Well, you could, but I wouldn't. What the is safe? You know, there are no bad words, but it's still an informal expression. And at business, in a business situation, we should usually keep our opinions to ourselves.

Unless you're the boss. I guess then you can do whatever you want. But when you're talking with your friends or when you're online, it's a good expression. And once again, it's the nice version.

Let's check out the dialogue. What the? What's wrong? The bank charged me a fee for putting money in my account. What? Are you serious? It's true. It's crazy.

I know. When I came back to America – I lived in Korea for over 20 years and I came back to America last year, 2014. I opened up a bank account and they charged me money to put my money into their bank.

Isn't that insane? I couldn't believe it. In order to keep my money at – the bank, I had to pay a fee. That's insane. That's crazy. And I remember I said, what the?

And the banker laughed and he said, yeah, well, it's not just us. Every bank charges this fee. I thought it was crazy. Anyway, that's reality. Can you give us an example, something that you heard earlier?

That just sounds insane. To your mind, it sounds ridiculous. It sounds crazy. Please tell us what that example was and everybody else, if you read the example and you agree that it's crazy, then I want you to reply with, what the?
