Easy English Expression. Rehashed! Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions. Come on, let's master English! Hi everyone, Coach Shane here, E-Cube number 496.
Today we're going to learn a word that you might not know, but it is a very good word. Enjoy E-Cube 496. Let's go back in time. Today's expression, to feign something.
To feign something. Are you feigning sick? He's feigning sleep. What does this mean, feign? F-E-I-G-N. To feign something is another way of saying to fake something.
To fake being sick. To fake sleeping. This is the idea. To play sick or to play dead. To act like you're sleeping. To act like you're sick. This is the idea, to feign something.
Now, most of us are adults. Most of you listening to this podcast are adults, right? So do you ever feign a sickness or something like this? When do we feign something?
We feign something so that we don't have to do something else, right? The perfect idea would be children. Yes, children, when they don't want to go to school, they feign sick, right?
Absolutely, absolutely. Oh, another good example. They say if you are in the forest and you see a bear or some other vicious animal, they say you should feign death.
You should pretend that you're dead. Just lay down on the ground like you're dead. Is that a good idea? I don't know. I've never. Well, actually, I have met bears in the woods and I ran away.
I did not feign dead. I ran away. I was lucky. But yeah, this is the idea. So, of course, you are an adult. You never feign sickness or death, right? What about on Monday morning?
You enjoyed the weekend? You don't want to go to work. Many people call the boss. Oh, boss. Oh, my God. I'm really sick. I was sick the whole weekend and I'm still sick.
I don't think I'll be able to work today. Uh-huh. Or sometimes they feign sickness on Fridays so they can have an early weekend. Yeah. Yeah. Don't do that.
Let's check out the dialogue. Oh, yeah. Whoa. Oh, here comes the boss. He saw us watching the game. Quick, feign death. Were you men watching the game?
Guys? Sue, bring me my gun. Let's make sure they're dead. When you are at the office... You are supposed to work. You are not supposed to watch football games and soccer games and baseball games and whatever.
You're not supposed to watch sports. These two guys were watching sports. The boss saw them and they're guilty. They know they're guilty. So they're feigning death.
They're stupid. But the boss is going to check to make sure that they're dead. He's going to use his gun and shoot them. Of course, it's just a joke. Yeah, don't feign death at work.
Not cool. But be honest. Do you ever feign sick? Some people do. They feign sickness. They feign an illness. Are you feigning sick? Feigning sickness to not go to work, feigning illness to not go to work is actually...
Pretty common. Lots of people do it. So once again, do you feign sickness so that you don't have to work or so that you don't have to study or so that you don't have to go to school? That's all I want to know.
And if you do, what kind of sickness do you feign? Is it a cold? Is it something more serious? Oh, boss, I think I'm having a heart attack. Yeah, I'm going to go to the hospital.
Oh, boss, I think I'm going crazy. I'm going to go to the hospital. Yeah, what kind of illness, what kind of sickness do you feign? Me, I don't. I don't have to go to work.
I work every day. But if I did work, yeah, I would feign a cold. I'm pretty good at that. Yeah, I can change my voice to sound like I have a cold, I think.
But once again, I don't lie. I never lie. The only lying I do is in bed. To feign something. To feign death. To feign illness. To feign sickness. To feign sleep.
It's what we do. It's what we do. Many humans. That's today's expression. Have a great day. The weekend is here. Yes, TGIF. No need to feign an illness.
You can be healthy all weekend. Have a safe weekend. Have a wonderful weekend with your friends and family. And yeah, I'll probably be here tomorrow. Take care, everybody.
Listen to the dialogue two more times. Please practice. Woo, yeah. Whoa. Oh, here comes the boss. He saw us watching the game. Quick, feign death. Were you men watching the game?
Guys? Sue, bring me my gun. Let's make sure they're dead. Ooh, yeah. Oh, here comes the boss. He saw us watching the game. Quick, feign death. Were you men watching the game?
