Today we have a great expression. I love it. Listen carefully. Constructive criticism. Constructive criticism. Okay, two big words. Do you have a pencil or a pen ready?

Here we go. C-O-N-S-T-R-U-C-T-I-V-E. Constructive, constructive criticism. C-R-I-T-I-C-I-S-M. Criticism, criticism. Constructive criticism. Constructive criticism.

Okay. So in America, when we use the word criticism, it almost always means to say something negative about something or somebody. Criticism. I don't like criticism.

I don't like people telling me negative things. Actually, criticism just means being judgmental, just saying if something is good or bad. That's criticism. But once again, most Americans, when they think of criticism, they think only of negative things.

So we have developed the expression constructive criticism. So what does constructive mean? Constructive means... building, something that you can build with, something that is beneficial.

So constructive criticism means criticism that will benefit the person. So let me give you an example. Let's say I made you some coffee and I ask you, do you like the coffee? And you said, it sucks, man.

I hate it. Well, that's not very nice. That doesn't do anything. Okay. I'm sorry that you don't like it. It sucks. You hate it. Okay. Well, goodbye. The world has been – part of your life has been wasted.

Now, let's try it again. Here's some coffee. Do you like it? Oh, well, it's a little bitter. Ah, it's a little bitter. Okay. So maybe I need to add some more sugar.

It's a little too strong. Oh, it's too strong. Maybe I need to, I don't know, do something about coffee. I don't know much about coffee. But this is constructive criticism, giving real information, not just saying something is bad, but saying something is bad in a way that can be fixed.

So once again, it tastes terrible. What can I do? milk add sugar less coffee i mean what what what what it doesn't mean anything it tastes bitter aha it's too bitter well then maybe i can add some i don't know sugar or cream something you know that's the idea let's say somebody gives you a resume would you please check this resume oh this resume is stupid man good luck you're not gonna get a job is that good

No, it's absolutely life has been wasted. It was a waste of time. Life was wasted. Now, this is the idea. Oh, you know what? When you make a resume and you put your school name, you should make the letters bigger or put them in bold.

Give recommendations, giving advice. This is constructive criticism. Do you understand? It's simple, right? It's an easy idea. But think about you. Do you just criticize people or do you give constructive criticism?

Let's check out a dialogue. What's wrong? This guy said my video was bad. Did he say why? No. At least give me some constructive criticism if you're going to say that.

Yeah, it happens to me all the time on YouTube, even on my podcasts. I get emails. I get comments from people saying, this video sucks. This video is stupid.

That teacher is boring. That teacher is ugly. Okay, none of that information really helps me. Tell me what was boring or what was sucky or tell me, you know, what about me was ugly?

My teeth? Maybe I can, I don't know, grow my mustache to hide my teeth. Is it my bald spot? Maybe I should wear a hat when I do my lessons. Give me something that I can see or understand so that I can fix if I choose to fix it.

Constructive criticism. It's so important. So the next time you want to say something about somebody and maybe that thing is not nice. Why don't you stop yourself and try to change it into constructive criticism?

So for example, let's talk about Justin Bieber, the American – or actually he's Canadian, a young boy who's – he's not a young boy anymore. He's a young man. He's a singer and he's a troublemaker. He's a jerk.

Oops, sorry. To all the Bieber believers, I'm just joking. I'm just using him as an example. Well, Justin Bieber has made lots of mistakes. So we could say, oh, he's a loser.

He's a stupid, spoiled, rich kid. He forgot about his fans. You know, we could say many evil or negative things. But let's give Justin Bieber some constructive criticism.

Justin needs to go home a little bit earlier. Maybe he needs to spend some time with his relatives to find out about family and relationships. Justin Bieber, maybe with all that money he has, maybe he can do something to help communities or help education or something like that. Maybe he can be some sort of a role model with all that power.

Justin Bieber has all that power, all those people looking at him. He could really be a positive influence. Instead of going drinking and getting in trouble, and we know all boys and girls do that, but because he's so powerful, he is, maybe he can do something nice like help people that have problems, drinking problems or drug problems, or maybe he can help children who come from broken homes where there's no mom or there's no dad.

Maybe he could be a really positive role model for those people. This everybody is constructive criticism. So if any of you know Justin Bieber, why don't you tell him that? Because I think he needs some constructive criticism.
