Easy English Expression. Rehashed! Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions. Come on, let's master English! Hello everybody, Coach Shane here.

You're listening to E-Cubed, Daily Easy English Expression. Today, number 470. I love today's expression. Actually, If you're going through a stressful time, this expression is kind of personal.

But in a philosophical way, it's a pretty cool question. Check out today's expression. Let's go back in time. Sometimes you look at your friend and you can see they did not sleep well.

They're tired. Maybe they're in a bad mood. And we know they must have a problem. They were thinking about something too much. Something was too stressful.

So it affected their sleep. They couldn't sleep well. In this situation, what's your problem is okay. But we have this expression. It's a great one. What keeps you up at night?

Now, what keeps you up at night... K-E-E-P-S. This is like an ongoing problem. So what keeps you up at night? What kind of things do you think about when you go to bed?

What's on your mind when you go to bed? What kind of problems are disturbing you? What's bothering you when you go to bed? Maybe it's your family. Maybe it's money.

Maybe it's education. You need more education. Maybe it's English. Oh, gosh, I hope not. Maybe it's your wife or your husband. Yeah, maybe there's a problem or maybe you're worried.

Maybe it's your health or maybe it's your schedule. Oh, there are so many things that can keep you up at night. Mm-hmm. So, what keeps you up at night?

Check out the dialogue. You'll find out what keeps me up at night every night. I can't sleep! You always look so happy. Yeah, thanks. But you? What keeps you up at night?

Oh, everything. My job, my bills, money. I wish I could help. Oh boy, yeah. If you've got a lot of stress, if you have a lot of worries, it's difficult to sleep.

It's difficult to get a good night's sleep. You're rolling around, you fall asleep, you wake up, you're still thinking about your problem. What keeps you up at night?

It'd be nice if global warming kept me up at night or the presidential election. But those issues are distant. What keeps you up at night for most of us?

It's the small things. But in our world, they're not small. They're big, right? Bills. Paying bills. The new boss. Relationships. We have so many problems.

And yes, you know, of course, they're little problems. And five years later, they're nothing. But right now, it's a problem. And it keeps me up at night.

It's true. If you have a friend and you see your friend and he looks pretty tired, like maybe he didn't sleep that much, you might want to ask him, hey, what kept you up last night? Past tense. What kept you up last night?

Did you go to bed late? What kept you up? What were you thinking of? What kind of problems were you thinking of? This is the idea. What keeps you up at night?

Almost always when we ask this question, it has that nuance of, What kind of problems have been disturbing you? What kind of problems do you think about when you go to bed?

And if there's serious problems, not only do you think about them when you go to bed, but you dream about them and then you wake up and you think about them and then you wake up in the morning and you're really tired and you think about them. Yeah, it could be a big problem.

I hope English is not keeping you up at night. If it is, let me know. I'll see if I can do something for you. Yeah. What keeps you up at night? What's bothering you?

What's on your mind? It's a great expression. And I hope that nothing is keeping you up at night. I hope that you're sleeping very, very well. Check out that dialogue two more times.

You always look so happy. Yeah, thanks. But you, what keeps you up at night? Oh, everything. My job, my bills, money. I wish I could help. You always look so happy.
