One of those is phrasal verbs. Phrasal verbs. And today we have a phrasal verb that can actually have several different So I want you to listen to today's podcast and learn everything I tell you, and then go to my community and talk about it.

Enjoy the podcast. Let's go back in time. Today we've got a fantastic phrasal verb. You know, if you want to master English, you need to know your phrasal verbs.

It is ticked off. I am so ticked off. Don't tick me off. You are starting to tick me off. To tick off. To tick someone off. What does this mean? It means to make someone angry.

You're starting to make me angry. You're starting to tick me off. You ticked me off yesterday. You made me angry yesterday. Oh, I'm so ticked off. I'm so angry.

This is a great phrasal verb. But why... Does tick off mean angry? Well, I'll explain it to you after you listen to the dialogue. What's wrong with John?

Eric ticked him off. Again? Eric keeps bothering him about smoking. Oh, I understand. I quit smoking. I really did. It's been almost one year. August 29th.

2014 was basically my last cigarette. Yeah, so I think it's been almost a year. Isn't that cool? Yeah, I'm very happy. But you know, over the years when I smoked, people would say, you're still smoking?

You're still smoking? You're still smoking? Oh, that would make me so angry. And when people would say that, you're still smoking? You're still smoking?

You're still smoking? Do you know what I would do? I would smoke more. I know it's stupid, but I would. It ticked me off. Shut up. If you want to help me, don't say, you're still smoking?

You're still smoking? That doesn't help me. That makes me angry. Yeah. So if you know somebody around you who smokes and you want that person to quit,

Figure out a nice way to help that person stop. Don't tick them off. If you tick them off, they're going to get really angry. So be careful. Okay. So why does tick off mean angry?

It's really easy. Do you know what a bomb is? B-O-M-B. A bomb. It's terrible, right? A bomb. It's terrible. Do you know what a time bomb is? Yeah, that's a bomb with like a watch with a timer.

And, you know, in the movies, the Hollywood movies, there's always a nuclear weapon with a timer. And, you know, the man saves the world when there's only three seconds left. You know, that's the idea. Well, that's the idea.

The old traditional time bomb had a watch. And what sound does a watch make? It goes... And if the watch goes to zero, the bomb goes off. This is the verb we use.

So we combine the ticking of the watch and the go off of the explosion. To tick off means to explode in angry. Don't tick me off. You are ticking me off.

I was so ticked off. That's why it means angry. Isn't that easy to remember? That's right. To tick off. So I want to hear from you. Who is the last person that ticked you off?

In my case, the last person to tick me off was Minty, my cat. I'm serious. This morning, she woke me up at 5 a.m., She was hungry, so I gave her some food.

At 5.20 a.m., she was throwing up. And I had to clean it. She ticked me off. Too early, too early. Please, Minty, do not tick me off when I wake up tomorrow morning.
