Easy English Expression. Rehashed! Hello everybody, my name is Coach Shane and welcome to Easy English Expressions. Come on, let's master English! Hello, everybody.
EQ number 431. My name is Coach Shane. Thank you so much for listening. Somebody said, who are you? Oh, well, I've been an English coach for almost 40 years.
Yeah. December 1986 is when I started. I've been an English teacher trainer. What else? You know, the TOEFL exam. I was a voiceover for the TOEFL exam.
Consultant for English training for General Electric. There's an international sales team. I don't know. I've just done a lot of stuff. And I'm your English coach, and it's great to meet you.
And we have a great word to master today. So enjoy E-Cube number 431. Let's go back in time. Today we've got a great word that you need to use. This is a great word.
The word is minute. Minute. Can you spell it? Minute. The spelling is M-I-N-U-T-E. Wait a minute. Is it minute? Like an hour, minute, second. I'll be with you in a minute.
Isn't it the same as minute? Yes. The spelling is the same as minute. But the pronunciation and the meaning are different. Oh boy, that's right. So the pronunciation is minute, minute.
And the meaning is very, very small, very, very tiny. And we use it when we talk about chances or percentage. So the perfect example would be Going to Las Vegas and playing the slot machines or the poker games.
What are your chances of winning? Minute. What about me? I'm an English teacher. What are Coach Shane's chances of being as rich as Bill Gates? The chances are minute.
Right now, I live in the desert. It is July 1st, 2015. What are the chances it will rain tomorrow? The chances are minute. Very, very minute. I'll give you some other usages after we check out the dialogue.
Wow, look at that car. If I had the money... That's pretty nice, huh? What are the chances I'll win the lottery? Minute. Yeah, winning the lottery, your chances are very minute.
But if you have a great business idea... then your chances are pretty good. Never give up. So many people became very successful, very young, and very old.
Oh, you bet. You bet. If you think your chances are zero, that's not true. Your chances are not minute. Your chances of becoming successful, maybe buying a really nice car if you don't have one already,
your chances are very good. They're not minute. Now, we also use this when cooking. So for example, let's say you're eating some cake and you notice there's a minute taste of cinnamon.
There's a very, very, very tiny taste of cinnamon in this cake. Or let's say at night you're sleeping and You hear something. There's a very minute sound.
A very tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny sound. Like maybe a mouse running. It's a cockroach! Ah! Yeah. Uh... Anyway, minute. We do use it to mean really, really, really, really tiny as in things.
But we especially use it when we're talking about the chances. And the chances are very, very small. We say minute. Your chance is minute. All right, that's today's expression.
It's a great word. And believe me, there are many opportunities to use this word. So I want you guys to try, okay? That's it. Check out the dialogue two more times.
