Broadcasting live between the race cars and the rocket ships. A little city called Port Orange. A lot of sunshine here just south of Daytona Beach. Much, much better than Ormond Beach.

Yes, it is. Somebody actually dared me to say that. It's a little competition between Port Orange and Ormond. So, I... I've staked my position. There it is.

So are you a happy person? I mean, not the kind of happy and you know it, clap your hands kind of happy person. People drive me crazy. But just a happy in general person.

Are you an obsessive person? Do you think they go together? I do if they're done right. And a lot of clients agree in the past month or two have been working with them on this.

You get it today. Yeah. Anyway, good to have you. It is a daily boost, the positive boost you need every single day. I want you to grow your life and grow your business.

That's why we talk about both. I just go back and forth. I talk to business people and career people all the time. To me, the business and the career is really important, but the personal person is important too.

So my name is Scott Smith. Thanks for stopping by today. You know, in 20 years of doing the show, I've never said, Between the race cars and the rocket ships.

It's a great, that's like a 1980s boss jock, top 40 radio kind of thing. Used to hear all the time. If you're young, you probably don't remember this stuff, but man, gosh, back in the day, remember that? I mean, I did this stuff, right?

Between the race cars and the rocket ships. It's the daily boost. Lock it in and rip the knob off. Okay. That was just way too much fun. I should do more of that stuff, right?

A little raspy today too. It does help. So let's talk about being happy. Is that okay? Why not? You don't want to be, you're not happy about it. Shut up.

You know, so I remember, did I say shut up on a podcast? That's not nice at all, but you know what I mean? Be nice to me. I remember being obsessed with things.

So let me ask you this question. Have you ever been so obsessed? Nobody could stop you. Now I still get that way a lot personally myself. It scares my wife to death because I'll get an idea.

I'll start talking about it in eight days. The Tesla I started talking about two months ago arrives. Yeah, I get kind of obsessed with things. And that's probably why I do what I do today.

Why I have so many interests that I just have done pretty well with. But do you ever get obsessed? I was talking to a friend of mine, a client, Ralph. Ralph is an aviation guy.

And I said, Ralph, do you remember when you were learning to fly 15, 16 years old and you just couldn't think about anything else? He said, oh, my God, that was it. Nothing but flying in airplanes.

Happened to be in radio. When I got into radio many, many years ago, my first career was radio. I'm so obsessed you couldn't stop me. There were nothing.

Hours? Who cared? Station? Who cared? Nothing mattered. Just let me on the radio. Let me do my thing. I remember I worked in Fuquay Verena, WAKS. First job, daytime radio station.

All day long, we did the obituaries. Yes. Believe it or not, we read the obituaries on the air. We tuned in to the tobacco auction, and we played some country music, too.

And when the trucker drove by and blew their horn, I'd have to open my microphone and say, hey, trucker. It was the law, and that town had to do it. But at seven o'clock, we went off the air. It was an AM day timer.

That meant at seven o'clock, you turn the transmitter off. It still happens today. It's just the way things are. And then we even pull out our records, our 45s.

My friend and I would do that, pull them out of our case and go in the same studio we'd been in all day long and start playing rock and roll records until two o'clock in the morning, becoming big time radio DJs, at least in our mind, right? Or practicing.

So obsessed, we couldn't help ourselves but to do it. And it worked out really well until one night we forgot to turn the transmitter off. That's a story you didn't hear from me.

I know it's been a few years, but Statue of Limitations, I do not know how long they are. Some things may have been said on the radio that maybe, well, you know.

Are you obsessed with things? So obsession, I kind of combine the words. I see obsession and passion as the same thing. I do. I talk about passion all the time.

But that's basically what I see it as, is you're stumbling around and something gets your attention and you suddenly are in, right? You become obsessed by it. So I assume it's the same thing. And there are two kinds of passion in this world that you may have heard about, generally accepted.

There's a couple of more kinds of passion too. But there are at least two, psychologically speaking, when you're talking about being happy, that all the psychologists who psychologically speak, they talk about.

harmonious and obsessive. Now, both are effective. Harmonious passion is, I think, a little more balanced, maybe the better choice for most people. This is where you work hard and you stay married, right?

You're happy, that kind of thing. That's the one where most people ought to be. And there's just obsession. And these are the rare people that they just so focused on one thing.

They're usually world-class in what they do, but they got, you know, five wives and a bunch of kids they don't know about and all that stuff, you know.

So obsession is good. It has a place. It has a time. Harmonious obsession a little bit better, right? And harmonious passion, I would say, too. By the way, a better way to say that.

But when I look at this, I look at something a little different. The third version that I've been talking about here the past couple of months, and that's what I call just a happy obsession.

And I think things change. And the question I posed to some of the people I'm working with was, you know, what are you happily obsessed about? What's that? And they all kind of stopped and paused.

You're just going to do it. You're just in. By the way, sometimes it could be bad for you. It can be. But the good ones, right? Like when I do this podcast right now, I'm really happily obsessed by doing this.

I just come in and do it. I'm going to be changing this podcast next year and we'll be making some formatic changes and things like that. But nonetheless, I am so thrilled to be digging in and doing it. I'm just happily obsessed by this.

You can't stop me. I got this morning to come in here and record. I said, I'm not going to the gym. I feel like I need to hit the studio. And my wife says, okay, because she's gotten used to me, right?

What are you happily obsessed by? If you were to ask yourself this question, what am I happy obsessed about? And you were to say, what if I did more of that and less of what I'm not obsessed about? And that's a hard thing, right?

I get the fact. I get the fact I've had this kind of semi-retired lifestyle forever. I've maximum flexibility forever. I don't work for anybody else. I control my schedule 100%.

I make my own income. I'm a, I was going to say I'm in control. I'm not sure about that. I'm in charge. No, I'm not sure about it. It doesn't matter. I'm flexible.

That's what I do. So I get the fact that I can actually say, Hey, I'm just going to do what makes me happy all day and not do the other stuff. But that's not true. Is it now?

Listen closely here. Cause this is where the magic happens. If I say what gets me happily obsessed and I take it a step further, if I flip the script,

Instead of going about doing the business of the day and then doing what I'm happily obsessed about, what if you flip it? What if everything about your happy obsession just lives every single time? That's what you do. You get out of bed in the morning and that's what you do.

Everything else is in the way. You still want to be responsible. You still want to get everything done. You still want to make sure your boss gets his money worth and you're paying all your bills and all that kind of stuff.

But nothing gets in the way of your happy obsession. So really just pause on this for a little bit because I found in the past week with some conversations, I took it to my larger school community. I had it in my clients first, then I took it to my inner circle, then I took it to these guys.

And you can see their eyes kind of cross. It's kind of like, oh, how am I going to do that? Here's the very simple way of thinking about it. And I've seen this with people that start a business, people that decide to meet somebody and get in a relationship.

I've seen it happen. And you've been there before. And so I just accept what we see as natural occurring in our life. And that is this. When you're obsessed, you can't wait to get back to it.

It's like some of you, it's like pickleball. Man, I got to work today, but I'd rather be playing pickleball. You get out of bed in the morning. Whatever is driving you, that's the driver.

You study it. You read it. Every time you got a moment, you're on your phone, you're checking up on it. Everything else just gets done and you get it done as fast as you can.

So you can do like I did. You get the tobacco auction out of the way. You get done reading the obituaries on the radio so you can play rock and roll disc jockey. And that was the whole reason for the day.

So flip the script, find something that just gets you going and And allow yourself to get going. And then be responsible and get everything done. If you want to be efficient, you want to learn how to get your job done fast and get back to what you really love doing, do it that way.

You're going to do it naturally anyway. Trust me. You will change when you wear yourself out. You beat your head against the wall forever. And do me one favor.

Do not wait until you're 65 and retire to decide to do this. Decide to do it today. Watch how everything changes very quickly.
