A positive boost you need every single day to grow your life and grow your business, get what you want. That's what it's all about. It's kind of my mission in life these days, not only for you, but for me, right? Anyway, my name is Scott Smith.
Good to have you. A lot of things come down to desire and focus and discipline and a subcomponent skill set, which is usually the issue. What do I mean by that?
I mean, you can have the desire, you can have the focus, you can have the discipline, but if you don't have the little things underneath it that allow you to do the job, it's like somebody says, hey, Scott, I want to do a podcast. Great, I'll show you how to do it. You've got to learn to talk in a microphone with some mic technique. You've got to learn to edit things like that.
Oh, I'm going to outsource that. I don't know how to do that stuff. Well, you've got to do it. You've got to sit down and learn the basics of communication.
And if you can't master that component skill, then you really can't do whatever the thing is you want to do. So that's what I mean by that, okay? But that's not what today's show is about. Well, it sort of is about that, I guess.
I run into a lot of people. Back 20 years ago when I started, I kind of entered this world in the four-hour workweek time period. And I came in as a original laptop lifestyle guy.
I didn't decide to have a freedom lifestyle and to do the laptop lifestyle. I didn't decide to make that what I was going to do. I simply decided that I just didn't want to do it the other way. My wife had passed away.
It was a big quantum change in my life. And that's what happens when you have a massive disruption, you get quantum change. And my change was I just didn't want to go back to doing it the other way.
So I said, okay, let's just do it this way, whatever way that was, and I went after it, okay? This is how life kind of goes. But as I go through this process, everybody is talking about productivity all the time. Well, Scott, that's great, but how are we going to do it?
How are we going to go down that path? I don't really care about productivity. I don't care about productivity hacks, even though it's something that is all over the internet and all over YouTube. It's waning quite a bit.
I mean, things like new apps and morning routines and the timer trick and things like that. It's like the morning routine and the cold water plunge. Everybody talks about the cold water plunge. And I've said, it's BS.
I don't care what Huberman says. I don't care what they say. The science has told us that it's BS. It makes you feel better for the moment. It makes you feel good about jumping in.
And then look what I did. I did cold water thing. It fires up your whole body. Yeah. But it's all real short term. Is that bad? No. If it gets you that, that's great.
But don't think it's the latest thing in the world that's going to change everything. That's going to move the needle. That's not the case. It's a lot simpler than that.
Same thing with most productivity hacks. They just don't work. Most people set their life up so they don't have to strain as much. Those are the successful people.
Let me show you what the science says here a little bit about this, okay? About trying to, you know, kind of be this productivity expert and hack everything. Listen, the days of Tim Ferriss hacking the world, even Tim Ferriss is a hot mess these days too. Because life is a hot mess.
Have you figured that out yet? Number one, willpower is overrated. It's an old idea that self-control is kind of a tank that runs dry. That has fallen apart.
Have you heard that before? Like motivation and willpower. You only have so much and then it's gone. Hmm. It's overrated. It doesn't disappear like that.
It's just there. What looks like discipline is mostly a good setup. Lots more on that this week. Disciplined people face fewer temptations. People with strong self-control don't resist harder.
They just arrange their days to have fewer fights. That's it. And most people that I talk to when it comes to this, like I have a lot of people that want to live, you know, as we call the freedom lifestyle. Freedom is basically, in my view, is this control of your time and enough money to have some fun.
That's about it. Now, if you're working in a career, you're like, man, I wish I had some time. I'm working 50 hours a week. So the freedom lifestyle is being free of that, doing whatever you want, whenever you want to do it and be able to afford it to and have the life you want.
That's all it is. And most people think that that means freedom. Let's just do whatever I want. That is a recipe for absolutely being put in prison. But a little bit more disciplined, a little more structured, everything falls into place.
A lot of people think productivity is about habits as well. Now, habits are cool, but you know they're not formed in 21 days. It's still out there. There'll be somebody new popping up the internet tomorrow.
Habits take 21 days to form. No, they don't. First off, pay attention to your own life. How long did it take? The truth is, habits can happen instantly if there's enough disruption behind it.
But medium-rise, it's 59 to 66 days. We've seen that. So if you get up and you go to the gym for two months, you're probably going to keep going to the gym. In fact, one of the main things about doing that, and you'll see this all the time, if you can go to the gym for 60 to 90 days, usually, while you may not go forever, you'll always get back to it.
Pretty cool stuff. Another productivity thing. Missing one day does not break a habit. A lot of people do that. Research tells us that a single blip barely dents your progress.
When you miss a week, boom. So I don't care how you hack things, to be consistent every single day and to get a little bit done every single day is really the trick. You can have the best habits in the world, the best discipline in the world, the whole thing, but if you let a week or two go by, you're going to keep sliding. That's all there is to it.

Valuing your work beats loving it. People who work hard because they believe the work matters always outperform people chasing passion. Now, as a guy who's got a program called Face Your Passion, I keep running into that all the time because it's called Face Your Passion. And people think, oh, I'm just going to chase my passion.
And the fundamental problem with it is that it just doesn't work. And I know that. We have to go from passion to purpose to meaning. We have to move it down.
So meaning, basically valuing what you do, right? So we have to move down to that point. And most people don't want to do it. If you're still in just, hey, I just want to do what I'm passionate about.
I want to do what makes my heart sing. Fantastic. You don't have to enjoy every minute of it to be successful. You just have to kind of be in the right direction where you value what you're doing.
But again, as a guy who has a program called Face Your Passion... The people who are just tasting their fashion will never, ever, ever get what they want. It's a big issue because they don't want to be disciplined. They don't want to do the work that's there.
They're not valuing the work enough. Procrastination is an emotion problem. It's not a time problem. Again, we're talking productivity, right? People trying to, I get this a couple days a week.
Scott, tell me how to stop procrastinating. I've gotten to the point now where I just, I don't even know what to say anymore. You're not putting it off because you're lazy or disorganized. You're avoiding how the task makes you feel.
You fix that feeling and the calendar takes care of itself. So if you're procrastinating, there is no reason other than you just think it's going to make you feel bad. And if you're still just kind of living in that emotional world, you're not ever going to get what you want. Because guess what?
The world's really hard. And yes, it should not be that way, but it is. Sometimes I'm not the nicest person on the planet because I've had a bad day or somebody cut me off in traffic or something like that. And you caught me at that time.
As Zig Ziglar used to say, somebody kicked my cat. If you don't know that reference, go check it out. Somebody kicks your cat a lot, doesn't it? What else?
Your phone is costing you even when you don't touch it. Have you heard the science yet? Just having your phone within reach pulls your attention. If you want to get something done and be very, very productive, just put it in the other room.
Just get rid of it. Now, right now I have my phone in front of me because I'm monitoring lots of different systems. I have the computers and monitors and cameras and all these things set up here. Phone's part of that deal.
As soon as I get done and I go to work and start to get some deep work time, that phone goes in the other room. I don't just turn it off. It's gone. So if you're looking for the simple quickest way to do a productivity hack, and you've heard this before, people say it all the time, but nobody wants to give up their phone.
Just coming back from Dollywood, it's crazy. It's like going to Disney World these days. It used to be you go down to a theme park. And you didn't even look at your phone.
You wanted to get behind those walls and not even see the world anymore. But now everything is Wi-Fi and ride times and you got to have your phone even to navigate the day. I don't know. It's kind of sad to me when I'm standing in the roller coaster line and 90% of the people are looking at their phone.
Welcome to 2026. I don't see it as a bad thing. It's just what it is, right? But put it away, okay? And finally, a little productivity hack for you is deciding in advance.
If it's 8 a.m., I open this and I do this. If it's time to write, I do it. I do the podcast that way these days. I actually have it scheduled. I schedule my podcast on Mondays.
And this week it's a Thursday because I traveled. I knew that I rescheduled my stuff. I do them all the same day. That keeps me kind of in the same mindset, the same energy levels, the same everything.
So if I get up and it's time to do the podcast and I feel tired, well, you're going to get a less show. But I'm still going to do it. So decide in advance what you're going to be doing. The bottom line here is this.
Productivity is not about squeezing more out of yourself. It comes down to kind of four things. Knowing why the work matters. Building the structure so you're not fighting yourself every day.
Protecting your focus. And getting better at those small skills like planning ahead and handling the feelings that make you kind of stall. So I would suggest that you do a very simple thing. Stop looking for the hack, build the setup, and let it carry you.
So when you build the setup, what happens is willpower is removed from the equation. It's going to fail you anyway. Eventually willpower is your friend that shows up to make you do things you don't want to do to begin with, right? And as soon as willpower says, yes, I stopped them, it leaps.
So don't worry about that. So anyway, different take on productivity today. My guess is you already know this. You've already been down this road before.
So stop trying for the hack. Just get up and do the thing you say you're going to do, all right? Oh no, Scott! Yeah, I know. It's the truth, but it hurts.
See you tomorrow on the Daily Boost.
